The Abkal represent Suburba's primary custodians of Abzu (aka the Matrix).
A massive utility complex known to most as "The Cortex" dominates the level of Suburba which the Abkal control. This facility was originally built as a centralized archival and information processing center, but its role has shifted as the Guilds increased their foothold and adjusted their priorities. Symphony took the most valuable parts of Deshret's information services to Delos and left the unguilded to fend for themselves. Thus, stewardship of The Cortex fell to the most dedicated collective of Divers: The Abkal.
The Abkal tend to and maintain The Cortex (Which they call "Durabzu"). They view the facility as a place bonded to two realms: Deshret and Abzu (The Matrix, cyberspace, etc.). The Abkal provide Matrix access to _nearly_ anyone who asks, including those who have not been welcomed into a Guild. The Abkal are also extremely skilled and methodical when using their position as a reminder that the Guilds are not the only ones who can influence the flow of information.
Most people in Deshret (especially in Suburba) enjoy the benefits of the Abkal's labor without a second thought. The Cortex is likely to be the first thing that they see after jacking into a dive rig for the first time.
