The ability to use emote to write in third person instead of first is very good, but the current implementation of it is insufficient. It will currently parse recogs other than the writer's and little else. There are two problems with this.

If you are the target of an emote, your recog will parse to you, but no further pronouns will, resulting in a nonsensical and confusing switch from second to third person mid-sentence. To that end, emote needs to parse pronouns that come after a recog to parse to that recog, rather than be unparsed.

There is no way for a writer to refer to their own recog in emote. They currently have to either write around it or switch to pose. This could be resolved by interpreting the writer's alias or coded first name as their recog the same way I does for pose. My idea, though, is to allow players to assign a recog to themselves that they can change anytime, for use both to refer to themselves when writing emotes and to use in any example text that refers to the player in third person, e.g. what you see when you use @lp or @tp.

Nehima, Eudaimonia and Defox13 like this.

I think emote should probably just parse recogs to the short desc. I don't need to see 'you' if I'm targeted by an emote; just show me my own alias! I much prefer 3rd person writing and dislike seeing you anyway, so this solves the whole pronoun issue.

And if emote parses your alias as your recog, it becomes easy to just write with that without needing to recog yourself.

BONUS: I'd love it if instead of writing "emote , " if it just automatically didn't put my name at the front if I wrote it into the emote myself. So I could write:

emote nods and smiles. and it'd do "Dice nods and smiles"-

but emote Laughing, Dice shrugs. would get me "Laughing, Dice shrugs."

Nehima likes this.

I considered proposing that idea, but I think it breaks when you get into a room with some people using emote and some people using pose. When some text refer to your character in the second person and others in the third person back to back, back and forth, I think that would be extremely jarring.
