There are four languages in relatively mainstream use across Deshret. All four are essentially combinations of modern languages in different permutations; the actual languages of the old world would survive only in bits and pieces.
Shinar is the common language, spoken across all of Deshret. Essentially all citizens would have opportunities to learn how to speak and read/write Shinar during Sepulchre-provided primary education.
The other three languages are a lot more specific to places/cultures:
Babble is a pidgin used among the slummers of Suburba.
Harran is a language spoken primarily within Sepulchre for ecclesiastical rituals, and possibly occult practices as well.
Nisabic is a language reserved for administrative and record-keeping purposes.
ALTERNATIVE LANGUAGES
There is no official sign language in Deshret, due to the Tessera chips in all citizens' brains that help them connect to the network. Certain individual groups, especially those engaged in criminal enterprise, may have evolved their own local sign/symbolic languages for encrypted physical communication.
FAQ
How many languages can my character learn?
Languages have their own slots separate from general skill slots, so you don't have to choose between being good at languages and your character's primary aptitudes. You'll have between 1-4 of these special language slots depending on your stats.
